Digitise

To convert something from a physical format to a digital format.

Dimension

A measure of something, often one of a set of three such measures (length, width, and height), used to describe the size of an object.

Discrete global grid system (DGGS)

A system for dividing the earth’s surface into a grid of small, equally-sized cells.

Discrete spatiotemporal object

An object with both spatial and temporal properties, such as a person or a building.

Dublin core

A set of metadata standards used to describe digital resources.

Easting

The east-west component of a location, typically measured in degrees or meters from a central meridian.

Entity

A thing that exists independently and has a separate existence from other things.

Extent

The full or partial area of interest within a dataset. An extent can be a specific geographic area like a country, state, or county; or it may be a more general area like the Gulf Coast region of the United States.

Feature

A single, identifiable object within a dataset. A feature can be a point, line, or polygon, and is often represented by a set of geographic coordinates.

Feature Type

The category or class to which a feature belongs. Feature types can be used to group features with similar characteristics, such as all the rivers in a dataset.
